Floating Shelf Decorating Ideas

Let’s talk about floating shelves and how decorating them can be the most fun experience! Really, decorating your shelves is like a little showcase of you and your personality and who you truly are. How exciting is that? If you just got your shelves and they are staring at you emptily with pity, and the task is seeming a little daunting; this article is for you. I’ll be dropping some inspiration and ideas based off of how I recently decorated my desk nook floating shelves. I personally love how they came out and have been loving sitting in my little desk nook ever since we decorated the space. It really brings a homey, cozy feeling to the space.

Quick Guide

  1. Candles
  2. Plants
  3. Books
  4. Vase
  5. Trinkets

1. Candles

Candles not only help your space smell amazing, but they also make good floating shelf decorations! A really fun idea is getting homemade candles that are made in vintage or cute funky jars. I have a couple made out of old bottles that my coworker made for me. (Thanks Jillian.) I absolutely love the aesthetic they bring to my shelf. The options for candles are endless, so find some scents that you love, a look that you love, and let’s bring these shelves to life.

2. Plants

Plants honestly bring any space life, because well, they are LIVING things! I love plants in my space. (Don’t get me wrong, I do have some faux succulents lurking in my space lol) But I think living plants bring a lot of peaceful aesthetics to any room. Not to mention there are actual benefits to having plants in your home! They are natural air purifiers, can reduce anxiety, increase the oxygen levels, and they can help promote healing and reduce indoor allergens. It’s easy to say plants are our friends, and bringing them inside can help elevate your space AND bring many health benefits to your home.

3. Books

If you have been around my blog a little bit, you’ll know that books are very present in my life. Books might as well be in every article I write. Haha So like seriously, get yourself some books, or put the books you already have on display when it comes to decorating your floating shelves. I love the elevated look it brings. Not to mention the source of entertainment ready to grab at any moment when you’re feeling like learning something, or disappearing into a fantasy world, or just a book to flip through for inspiration. The options are limitless. Here are some ideas for books to get for your space that I highly recommend.

4. Vase

There are so many different options of vases! You could add some dried baby’s breath flowers or leave it empty or even put pens in it. I have a cute cowgirl boot vase that I haven’t put anything in yet but the piece itself is so cute that it can definitely stand alone. Fun and funky vases are in and they are a great option for decorating your floating shelves and other spaces as well.

5. Trinkets

Trinkets, I think, are hard to just purchase on amazon. Sure , I have purchased some cute little trinkets, like my cloud selenite bars from Etsy. But I think they ultimately come from experiences in life. They are little things you pick up along the way, purchased or maybe not. Little things that stuck out to you during your adventures in life. Like my painted ceramic cat that I picked up at the latino market in San Antonio, or my lucky cat that was mounted on the dash of my used car that I bought. I wouldn’t rush the process of getting trinkets. Just let them come in due time to adorn your shelves.

These are some ideas based off of how I have recently decorated my little desk nook. Everything is interchangeable and it’s about finding what fits your style and personality within each category. Have fun with it. You don’t need to rush it. It took me like three days to fully decorate my set of three floating shelves because i’d find some things around the house I wanted to add and then late think of something else I could add. I just kept building on it and had fun with it. So happy decorating to you all.
